Cherai Beach Yoga Retreat
A gathering exploring the depth of yogic living. December 30th, 2026 - January 10th, 2027
Starting at 18 000 SEK
Our yoga retreat at Cherai Beach welcomes everyone from seasoned yogis to those returning after a break, as well as complete beginners. Nestled in Ratheesh’s home state of Kerala, this retreat offers a closer glimpse into the depth of yoga beyond the walls of a studio.
This retreat embodies the holistic essence of yoga through daily practices of asana (physical postures), pranayama (breathing exercises), mantra chanting, meditation, optional add-on Ayurvedic treatments, Ayurvedic nourishing meals and evenings of reflective silence and philosophical discussion. The retreat is a carefully crafted experience designed to challenge and equally rejuvenate both the body as well as the mind.
My intention is to offer you space - both in time and spirit - to experience yoga beyond the limits of daily life and studio practice.— Ratheesh Acharya
What to expect
The Cherai Yoga Retreat is an invitation to gently deepen your experience of Hatha Yoga through a thoughtful blend of daily practices, enriching philosophical discussion, and nourishing meals. Together, these elements offer a glimpse into the vast ocean of yogic living.
With nearly two decades of hosting this annual gathering, and inspired by the simplicity of ashram life, this retreat is designed as a space to slow down, reconnect and reflect. We warmly welcome you to step away from the pace of everyday life and discover how even a small pocket of time devoted to yourself can nurture and restore the body, mind, and spirit.
-
Our group sessions sit at the heart of the retreat. Ratheesh gently guides you to build strength and steadiness in your asana practice through dynamic classes and workshop-style Hatha yoga and meets each practitioner at their given level. With more time together, there is space to pause, explore, and explain—free from the constraints of a fixed class ending.
We’ll take a closer look at a selection of postures and movement patterns, breaking them down into manageable elements that can be more fully integrated into flowing, sequenced practice. Rather than focusing on “improvement,” the emphasis is on cultivating deeper awareness within the body.
Through pranayama, you’ll learn to regulate the rhythmic flow of prana and apana (in and outbreath) to reset the nervous system. We’ll also explore the soothing essence and quiet wisdom of mantra chanting, often woven together with guided meditation to calm the mind and invite deeper reflection.
-
Sadhana is a foundational principle of yogic living and an important part of Ratheesh’s Hatha yoga teaching. The discipline it cultivates creates a ripple effect that extends into daily life. During the retreat, you’ll be encouraged to explore and deepen your own sadhana of pranayama, meditation and mantra practice, whether you already have an established practice or are just beginning.
If you already have a sadhana, you’re invited to consult with Ratheesh to ensure it continues to support you in the most aligned way during your time in the retreat.
The intention is to cultivate a steady sense of discipline and self-reliance—so you leave with the confidence to stand on your own feet in your practice, without feeling dependent on a studio.
-
A key way yogic knowledge has traditionally been passed from teacher to student is through a seated, conversational format known as ABC. Here, the inquisitive mind is encouraged, and we come together to explore the depth and breadth of yogic philosophy.
These sessions are open and dialogical, inviting questions as we reflect on selected teachings from ancient texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, the Vedas, and the Upanishads. Through conversation, we begin to unpack their relevance in a modern context.
We’ll also revisit timeless stories that continue to offer insight into the human experience—touching on themes and challenges that transcend time and place.
The intention of these sessions is to cultivate critical thinking, deepen self-inquiry, and encourage thoughtful reflection on both our inner world and the wider human experience.
-
Meals are thoughtfully planned and freshly prepared to nourish and sustain you throughout the retreat. In line with the traditional ashram setting, we share two meals a day—brunch and dinner—allowing the body time to fully digest and settle between practices. Ayurvedic herbal teas are available at all times.
Set in the lush landscape of Kerala, we are fortunate to draw from an abundant variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and legumes. Meals are lovingly prepared by a local family who have been cooking for the retreat for many years, bringing both care and deep familiarity to each dish. The menu offers a gentle exploration of regional cuisine, prepared in accordance with Ayurvedic principles to support both vitality and ease in practice. All dishes are vegan and gluten-free, and while Indian cooking often embraces rich spice, flavors are softened to accommodate a range of palates.
If you have any specific dietary requirements or allergies, please include them in your registration form so we can best support you.
-
Ayurvedic treatments are available as an optional addition to your retreat experience. These therapies are designed to support the body in a variety of ways—from easing muscle soreness and addressing old injuries, to reducing inflammation, restoring balance, and inviting deep relaxation.
Each treatment is performed by two therapists working in synchronized flow, using carefully selected herbal and medicated oils—an essential element of Ayurvedic healing. Sessions last approximately one hour and are tailored to your individual constitution and needs.
The following treatments are available: Abhyanga, Vishesh, Chavitti Thirumu and private health consultations with Ratheesh.

In modern life, silence has become a rare kind of luxury. Just as the body needs space between meals to properly digest, the mind, too, benefits from moments free of constant stimulation.
Drawing on many years of experience leading silent meditation retreats, R gently weaves periods of silence into this retreat.
A few evenings spent in silence create space for deeper rest and renewal, while also inviting a more reflective state—allowing you to more fully absorb and integrate your experiences throughout the retreat.
Daily Schedule
Please note that the schedule may vary from day to day, depending on planned excursions and activities.

Between the yoga sessions, there is plenty to explore. Kerala’s coastal landscape is interwoven with a beautiful network of waterways, inlets, lakes, and canals connecting villages along the shore. This unique ecosystem, known as the backwaters, stretches for nearly 900 km and offers an immersive glimpse into local life.
Depending on the group’s preferences, we typically include curated outings such as a temple visit and a trip to a local spice market. You’ll also experience a traditional Kerala festive meal, known as a thali, offering a rich taste of regional cuisine.
Deeply rooted in culture, the region is alive with music, as well as traditional theatre and dance, creating a vibrant and enriching atmosphere. Along the coastline, Kerala also offers endless stretches of serene, paradise-like beaches—the perfect setting to rest and restore between classes.

Welcome to the retreat
— A note from Ratheesh
The retreat at Cherai Beach is a cherished gathering, where we come together in a place that invites a sense of coming home.
Situated in my home state of Kerala, it brings me great joy to guide students not only through a physical journey to India, but also through a much deeper inner one. While participants may arrive expecting a simple getaway in a beautiful destination, many leave saying it became a turning point - a journey into themselves. Exploring the vibrant landscapes of Kerala often mirrors an internal exploration: the mind softens, perception expands, and dormant insights awaken. Some discover something within they did not know existed. Others finally find what they had been seeking for a long time.
My intention is to offer you space - both in time and in spirit - to experience yoga beyond the limits of daily life and studio practice.
And no matter how many retreats I organize, every group that travels across the globe to join fills me with the same excitement and gratitude. Each retreat is new, alive and deeply personal.
I feel a renewed determination each year to offer more than just a retreat - I want you to experience my hometown beyond the surface of tourism. I want to serve you some of my favorite childhood vegetarian dishes, just as my family prepared them for me. I want you to see Kerala not only as a traveler, but as a welcomed guest - walking through its daily rhythm, witnessing the authentic life of its people.
I look forward to inviting you to my family home, introducing you to my closest relatives, and sharing the sacred space of our home temple. If you wish, I will arrange a traditional yogic ritual, or pooja, so you may experience the devotional side of yoga that is often unseen in the West. Along the way, I will share practical Ayurvedic tips and simple remedies - small teachings that have sustained our way of life for generations.
Through all of this - and through the daily practice of yoga - I will guide you personally, meeting you where you are, and helping you grow both outwardly in your physical practice and inwardly in your understanding. This retreat is a rare opportunity to live together in constant awareness, immersed in the vast oceanic spirit of yogic living.
With open arms, I welcome you.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes—beginners are welcome.
The retreat is rooted in traditional Hatha yoga, with a focus on awareness, discipline, and exploration rather than fast-paced movement. Ratheesh will guide you where you are, helping you grow outwardly in your physical practice and inwardly in your understanding. There is space to move at your own pace, pause when needed, and build your practice step by step.
If you’re curious and ready to engage with the practice, this can be a supportive and meaningful place to begin.
-
You’re welcome to bring a family member, as long as they are also willing to take part in the retreat experience.
The retreat follows a shared structure rooted in practice, discipline, and reflection, and it’s important that all participants contribute to maintaining that space. We therefore ask that anyone joining comes with an openness to engage with the schedule and overall intention of the retreat.
-
We recommend packing a few essentials to support your practice and stay.
A yoga mat is important, and you’re welcome to bring any additional equipment you enjoy using—such as a blanket, bolster, or blocks—though these are not required. You may also find it helpful to bring something comfortable to sit on during meditation and pranayama practices.
A reusable water bottle is recommended to stay hydrated throughout the day. For daily practice, bring comfortable yoga clothing, and if you plan to visit the beach, a bathing suit.
For temple visits, please bring white clothing that covers the shoulders and knees, in line with local customs.
-
If this is your first retreat, there’s nothing specific you need to prepare beyond an open mind and a willingness to step into a different rhythm.
Retreat life tends to be simpler and with a different structure than everyday life with set times for practice, meals, and rest. This rhythm is there to support you—creating space to slow down, turn inward, and step away from usual distractions.
It’s also natural for the experience to feel both nourishing and, at times, a little challenging, as you spend more time with yourself and the practice.
-
Group size for the Cherai Yoga Retreart will vary between anywhere from 10-25 participants.
-
We recommend checking the latest travel guidelines and health recommendations for India from your local health authority or a travel clinic before your trip, as requirements can vary depending on your country of origin.
In general, routine vaccinations are typically advised, and some travellers choose to take additional precautions based on personal preference and medical guidance.
You are also responsible for ensuring you meet current entry requirements for India, including any visa or documentation needed at the time of travel.

We’re sometimes asked why our Ayurvedic treatments are offered at a higher price point than other options in the area. The answer lies in the level of care, training, and personalization behind each session. Our treatments are performed by two therapists working in seamless harmony—pairs who have trained and practiced together over many years—allowing for a depth and balance that a single practitioner simply cannot provide in the same time. This approach stays close to traditional Ayurvedic practice, where such attention and coordination were standard, though it is less commonly maintained today.
We also prepare our oils individually, using carefully developed blends and traditional fermentation methods tailored to each person, rather than generic, off-the-shelf products. Guided by our Chief of Therapist with more than 20 years of experience, each treatment is thoughtfully designed to be both nurturing and effective—something we believe is reflected in our pricing.
What not to expect
While we aim to offer a clear sense of what to expect from the retreat, we also feel it’s important to share what it is not—recognizing that this experience may not be the right fit for everyone.
-
Our schedule is intentionally kept open and flexible. Much of the rest and rejuvenation comes from slowing down to a more natural rhythm—something modern life rarely allows. We invite you to embrace the luxury of easing your pace, disconnecting from the everyday to allow more time for reflection.
Each day also includes dedicated free time outside our yoga classes and evening sessions, inviting you to follow what feels most nourishing in the moment—whether that’s enjoying the beach or pool, reading and journaling, or engaging in gentle self-practice such as meditation, pranayama, or mantra chanting.
-
While the accommodations are considered higher-end by Indian standards, it’s important to note that they do not reflect a luxury stay. They serve as a gentle, humble reminder of the ashram-style traditions that have been passed down through generations—simple, functional, and centered on practice rather than opulence.
Rooms are simple, tidy, and clean. Our focus is not on luxury, but on creating a comfortable, welcoming space for a yoga-focused retreat that is accessible to a wide range of budgets.
-
Our meals are thoughtfully prepared as a shared experience rather than an à la carte offering. With the exception of any dietary requirements or allergies, our Ayurvedic chefs create daily nourishing menus for the group, varying ingredients to provide a rich diversity of plant-based, nutrient-dense foods.
-
The yoga works in sweet whispers over time. While a single retreat can offer deep rejuvenation and meaningful reflection, true growth continues after you return home. Integrating the practices into your everyday life and allowing time for their effects to unfold is just as important as the retreat itself.
